Butter-Toasted Hot Dog with Caramelized Onions
Boiled sausages pan-toasted in butter, tucked into steamed buns with soft, golden caramelized onions, ketchup, and mustard.
Ingredients
- 2 hot dog sausages
- 2 hot dog buns
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 1β2 tsp butter
- Ketchup, to taste
- Mustard sauce, to taste
- Water, for boiling and steaming
Method
-
Bring a pan of water to a gentle boil and add the hot dog sausages. Cook them for a few minutes until heated through, then remove and set aside.
-
In a pan, add a little butter and the sliced onions. Cook on low to medium heat, stirring occasionally, until they turn soft, golden, and caramelized. Remove and keep aside.
-
In the same pan, add a little more butter if needed and toast the boiled sausages until lightly browned on the outside.
-
Meanwhile, steam the hot dog buns for a short while until soft and warm.
-
Place the toasted sausages inside the softened buns. Top with the caramelized onions, then add ketchup and mustard sauce. Serve warm.
Tips: Boiling the sausages first keeps them juicy and ensures theyβre heated through evenly β toasting them in butter afterwards gives them a much nicer flavour and colour. Cook the onions slowly so they soften and sweeten properly without burning. Steaming the buns makes a big difference and gives them a soft, fresh texture. Pairs nicely with fries, potato wedges, or a simple side salad.
