Ingredients

  • 2 hot dog sausages
  • 2 hot dog buns
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1–2 tsp butter
  • Ketchup, to taste
  • Mustard sauce, to taste
  • Water, for boiling and steaming

Method

  1. Bring a pan of water to a gentle boil and add the hot dog sausages. Cook them for a few minutes until heated through, then remove and set aside.

  2. In a pan, add a little butter and the sliced onions. Cook on low to medium heat, stirring occasionally, until they turn soft, golden, and caramelized. Remove and keep aside.

  3. In the same pan, add a little more butter if needed and toast the boiled sausages until lightly browned on the outside.

  4. Meanwhile, steam the hot dog buns for a short while until soft and warm.

  5. Place the toasted sausages inside the softened buns. Top with the caramelized onions, then add ketchup and mustard sauce. Serve warm.

Tips: Boiling the sausages first keeps them juicy and ensures they’re heated through evenly β€” toasting them in butter afterwards gives them a much nicer flavour and colour. Cook the onions slowly so they soften and sweeten properly without burning. Steaming the buns makes a big difference and gives them a soft, fresh texture. Pairs nicely with fries, potato wedges, or a simple side salad.
